Being open to experience helps us broaden our perspectives, build meaningful relationships and make positive changes in our lives. Here’s what openness means, why it’s beneficial and how you can cultivate openness in your everyday life.
Before we can grow, we must be open to change.
That’s why we include openness as one of the defining values in the Doe Prints assessment—to help you understand how you handle new ideas and experiences and what you can do to broaden your horizons.
The Doe Prints assessment defines openness as the tendency to emphasize independent action, thought and feeling, as well as a readiness for new experiences and different activities.
In psychology, openness, or openness to experience, is a personality trait that denotes a person's receptivity to new ideas and experiences.
People with a high openness score are more curious. They tend to seek out different experiences and are comfortable with unfamiliar situations. They’re also more likely to be in touch with their inner feelings and enjoy surprises.
There are six facets of openness to experience:
When you’re open to experience, you’re more likely to be creative, seek out learning opportunities and devise novel solutions to problems.
Openness also correlates with well-being and overall happiness. It fosters positivity and personal relationships. In short, being open to experience can enhance your life significantly.
Openness may not come naturally to some people, and that’s OK! You don’t need to do a 360 and jump off a cliff to experience new things.
