Doe Prints is more than a personality quiz—it’s an insights assessment that helps you avoid echo chambers.

Enneagram. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Rorschach inkblot. StrengthsFinder. If you’ve ever taken one (or more) of these, you can understand why they’re so popular. These personality assessments present results that give you a way to identify yourself more concretely, define your characteristics more distinctly and might even help you explain who you are at your core. They give you a chance to better understand and express yourself. Plus, they’re fun to take!

At The Doe, we’ve created Doe Prints (Beta). It’s more than just a fun personality quiz. It’s designed to give you insights that help you avoid echo chambers and consume media more intentionally.

Doe Prints Personality Quiz in a Nutshell

The Doe Prints quiz is a 17-question personality assessment that infers your distinct profile—your Doe Print—made up of five defining values:

  1. Closeness: How much you enjoy being connected to family and setting up a home.
  2. Stability: How much you seek equivalence in the physical world and favor the sensible, the tried and tested.
  3. Curiosity: How much desire you have to discover, find out and grow.
  4. Goodwill: How much you show concern for the welfare and interests of others.
  5. Openness: How much you emphasize independent action, thought and feeling, as well as how ready you are for new experiences.

The levels at which you resonate with these values predicts your behavior and consumption patterns. And it’s unique to you—just like your fingerprints. Hence, your Doe Print is a snapshot of your values that’s unlike anyone else’s Print.

As Unique as Your Fingerprint

One of the things that sets the Doe Prints quiz apart from other online personality assessments is that each result is extraordinarily personalized. Each question in the quiz allows you to type in an explanation as to why you agree or disagree with each of the 17 statements. Then, your multiple-choice responses and explanations are run through linguistic analytics to derive each of your value levels. The more input you provide, the more data our language processing models have to work with. Over time, as we evolve The Doe and as you get the chance to share your thoughts with us, your Doe Print will become more refined, more accurate and more unique to you. If you want to understand it a little more, skip to The Nitty Gritty section, and we’ll explain the science and tech behind Doe Prints.

How Doe Prints Helps Break Down Echo Chambers

Now, we’re not claiming that by taking the Doe Prints quiz, you’ll begin to see the world in a different light. We wish it was that easy too! We are, however, using the data you provide to serve up content that doesn’t reinforce your echo chambers.

Self-Awareness

Being able to identify who you are and what you value is the first step to recognizing what can be done to broaden your worldview. After all, it’s difficult to seek out varied perspectives if you don’t first know how to define your own tendencies. Your Doe Print gives you objective measures to quantify your values, and there are so many ways to use this information. Here’s an easy one to get your started: Read content that differs from your values.

We’ve got that covered.

Recommendations

In your dashboard, you’ll find personalized recommendations that give you a variety of narratives based on your Doe Print. Some of these recommended narratives might totally resonate with you. Some of them might evoke strong emotions. Some might even infuriate or terrify you. It’ll be a mixed bag, and that’s the point.

The Doe’s mission has always been to promote civil discourse—encouraging consumption of a variety of material from different perspectives is a big part of achieving that goal.

With the digital age bringing social media into the mix, the idea of the echo chamber effect has become an increasingly ubiquitous concept. Some research, like that published by Public Opinion Quarterly and Semantic Scholar, suggests that recommender systems play a role in creating spaces where only the like-minded come together, particularly in the setting of social media and search results. A 2021 study on the echo chamber effect on social media, published by PNAS, concluded that users online do, in fact, prefer information that adheres to their worldviews, ignore dissenting perspectives and form polarized groups around shared narratives.

It’s worth noting that research has uncovered marked differences between the various social media platforms and their contribution in promoting filter bubbles and echo chambers. There is evidence, too, that while recommender systems may narrow consumption tendencies, they may also do the exact opposite. That’s what we aim for—the broadening of content diversity. Unlike recommenders used on platforms like Facebook and Twitter that encourage segregation, our recommendations are designed to help you step outside of your filter bubble. To achieve more effective communication, reduced bias and greater empathy for one another, we cannot afford to narrow our worldviews and silo ourselves into polarizing communities. With Doe Prints, we’re addressing this risk head on.

More Reading Powered by Your Doe Print

If you want something a little more predictable, your dashboard also includes two more sections with personalized selections powered by your Doe Print data—stories with shared values and stories with different values. We get it. You’re not always looking for a challenge. Sometimes you might just want to relax, maybe cozy up with a mug of hot chocolate and read some stories that are completely in your comfort zone. Pick a few narratives from the stories with shared values list and read away. Sounds like an amazing night. But sometimes, you have to put your thoughts and beliefs to the test. That’s why we curated a personal list of those stories with different values.

No matter how they’re curated for you, the narratives are always unfiltered, honest, thought-provoking and, most importantly, from real people with real lived experiences. Our editorial team takes a lot of care to publish stories from all backgrounds and perspectives, so we know the narratives you choose to read are only going to add to your bank of diversified points of view. These Doe Print-powered selections help you make the choice.

Doe Print Comparisons

When you do finally settle on some narratives to read, there’s still more to explore. Since the Doe Print is generated via linguistic analytics, members aren’t the only ones that get a Doe Print—every single story gets one too! From narrative to narrative, you can check their unique Prints and determine whether the differences or similarities in their Prints are helping or hurting your reading diversity.

Don’t forget—you, too, have a Doe Print! In other words, you have the opportunity to check yourself in comparison to each narrative. In the Print comparison graph, the two color-coded dots represent your Doe Print scores and the selected narrative’s Print score. The farther apart the dots are, the more different your values are compared to the narrative Print. The closer the dots, the more aligned you and the narrative are with that particular value. Does the narrative Print look totally different to yours? Cool. Different perspectives are only going to help. Do your values closely match the values in your chosen narrative? Maybe for your next read, it’s a good idea to choose something a little more different. Even away from your dashboard, we find ways to incorporate your Doe Print so you always have the power to avoid siloing yourself into an echo chamber.

The Nitty Gritty

If you score high in curiosity, for example, you might want to learn more about how it all works from a scientific or technical point of view. We’ve got you covered. If not, skip ahead to How Will Doe Prints Evolve.

Doe Prints Approach vs. Everything Else

Rather than relying only on Likert scale responses to rate agreement on questions, we’re using natural language processing in combination. While Likert scale responses do a great job of gauging a simple reaction to a statement, they lack nuance and only provide one avenue of information—whether you agree or disagree. With the Doe Prints quiz, we want you to have the chance to explain yourself. That’s why we’ve included input fields and use both sets of data to generate one-of-a-kind results. This allows us to create a profile that’s more refined than your usual personality assessment.

We’re also not aiming to pinpoint your personality type but offer a more well-rounded view of your beliefs. The metrics your Doe Print displays are defining values we’ve determined from our own extensive research. These defining values are metrics that we discovered were most prioritized from a self-understanding and learning point of view. With closeness, stability, curiosity, goodwill and openness being considered the keys to growth, your Doe Print results help generate data that lets us optimize for your personal learning experience. We’re not trying to tell you who you are and who you aren’t. We are trying to give you a quantifiable way to understand how your values might influence the way you interact with the world and consume content.

The Tech Behind Doe Prints

You might be wondering how reliable your Doe Print results are—the answer is the classic non-answer: it depends; it’s complicated. Psychological metrics are inherently difficult to measure with precision. However, the model we’re using was built by an exceptionally reputable technology leader and is ever evolving as newer, better technology comes about. It also relies on more data than a simple agreement. The linguistic analytic model receives more input from you, giving it more data to work with to aggregate and predict a more accurate depiction of your values.

The Science Behind Doe Prints

These models can only draw correlations and make predictions. It can’t read minds and it can’t tell you exactly what you think and believe. Nonetheless, the IEEE shared research that shows that human language predicts personality, thinking style, behavior and preferences. From predicting personality traits from Twitter profiles to predicting personality in bloggers and personality and language use in self-narratives, there is no shortage of research that suggests written words can be analyzed to predict personality characteristics.

Along that same plane, there are several studies that suggest personality correlates with and can predict behavioral outcomes or preferences. Some examples: marketing messages that are more effective when tailored to the audience’s personality, correlating personality type with preference for performance cars and the effects of personality characteristics on brand preferences.

All this existing research lets us confidently utilize written words as a predictor of value preferences and behaviors.
